              In South Florida, it is only April and already we have been almost into the ’90s. This portable ac unit has quickly brought us relief and will continue to do so through the whole summer I am sure. Right now I only have it on low cool and our whole 2/2 house is comfortable and it is cold to me in the kitchen where I set the air portable ac unit up (the only window in the house which goes up and down). I am often frustrated with the need for oneself to almost be a professional carpenter or assembler in buying most modern products but the assembly and installation for this was virtually painless. Thank you Frigidaire, this portable ac unit product is true to your name and I am sure it will save my family from the sauna my house was last summer!

I have had this portable ac unit for a year now, and it cools the room very nicely. I usually have my flat screen on, my ps3, laptop, home theater and nighty+ degrees outside and my bedroom feels cool like inside a mall. Its a pretty hard working little unit. It is not noisy, but the air flow has a sound obviously. You can faintly hear the compressor working in the background but that is expected. I do not know why some people make such a big deal out of that normal sound. The only thing I dislike about the unit, is that it only works in the high setting at the beginning, then you can switch it to the low position after the room has cool down. The manual lets you know that in advance, so it is not a defect. This is my second summer working the unit, and I usually run portable ac unit  the whole day without a problem, every day.

            I got this portable ac unit to replace another brand of the same BTU and it is far superior to the other – the other was more expensive than this air portable ac unit. The original one was installed to be a booster unit for the kitchen and dining room area. This Frigidaire unit handles that area and the living room, too. So, I am getting a good deal for my money and saving on electricity, too. This is the only air portable ac unit  I will buy from now on. In this summer I very happy with portable ac unit.

There are various vents-less ready-built fireplace units available in different size, makes and styles that would fit today’s homes. However, prior to the vent-less fireplace era, homes were built with working chimneys for venting-out wood burning fireplace, Note that there are still a lot of homes designed with built-in fireplaces with either working or non-working chimneys, non-working chimneys are built purely for aesthetics and ambiance.

What are the parts of the chimney? Not everyone knows that a chimney has several parts in order to “work”. It is not just a stack of bricks or stones on top of the fireplace. Here are the parts of a chimney and their definitions. Knowing each structure can help in troubleshooting a chimney.

VERTICAL AIR CONDITIONER

Flue – The flue is the vertical passageway or vertical tube (s) that provides the path for the smoke to be vented out of the house. It is usual to see one or more flues to serve as vents for the fireplace, wood stove, furnace and other appliances that need a flue. More often than not, brick chimneys have two or more flues while metal chimneys only have one.

Flue Liners – Chimney liners are important to improve a chimney’s performance. Liners protect the bricks and mortar joints from developing cracks. A properly installed liner must cover the chimney’s interior completely and must be set at no less than two inches above the chimney’s crown. Liners can be aluminum, terra-cotta, cast-in-place or stainless steel.

Chimney Crown – The crown is the mortar crown at the chimney’s opening. The mortar crown slopes out of the chimney so that rainwater or moisture drips toward the roof and not into the flue.

Chimney Cap – The chimney cap acts as a cover for the chimney. Without it, the chimney would be wide open. It is also referred to as chimney pots or rain cap. In North America, chimney caps are more of small roofing at the chimney’s opening. Caps prevent downward drafts, accidental intrusion of birds, small animals, snow, rain and other outside debris from getting into the chimney flue. Caps are made of black steel, copper or stainless steel.

Flashing – The flashing is placed at the point where the chimney protrudes from the roof. The flashing is commonly made from galvanized iron, aluminum, copper, lead, roll-roofing or tin. This keeps the water from getting into the chimney chute thereby protecting the flue, roof, rafters and ceiling.

Dampers – A damper for the chimney is commonly made of two metal plates. This closes and in effect, seals the fireplace when it is unused. The metal plates are not 100% sealed so draft can come from the fireplace. The metal plates can rust so it is best to periodically check it. Change the damper to a more efficient one with caps for more protection from the weather.

Cleanout door – This part is at the base of the flue and should be rustproof and airtight. This is the point of access for the chimney sweep for cleaning and maintenance. The cleanout door, however, are not found in chimneys with fireplaces as the opening of the fireplace is large enough to serve as entry point for cleaning the chimney.
